The sales tax in Beverly Hills is currently 9.5%. State law caps local sales tax at 10.25%. Under existing law, the County of Los Angeles or another regional entity could raise the Beverly Hills sales tax rate from 9.5% to 10.25% and collect that incremental revenue for regional purposes without allocating that additional sales tax revenue to Beverly Hills. Measure RP reserves that remaining 0.75% sales tax increment is for local use only and would only take effect if the County or another regional entity successfully imposes a sales tax in Beverly Hills.
Currently, 33 cities in Los Angeles County have raised their sales tax to the 10.25% cap. These cities include: Alhambra, Arcadia, Azusa, Burbank, Compton, Covina, Cudahy, Culver City, Duarte, Gardena, Glendale, Glendora, Hawthorne, Huntington Park, Irwindale, La Verne, Lakewood, Lawndale, Long Beach, Lynwood, Monrovia, Montebello, Norwalk, Paramount, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, Pomona, San Gabriel, Santa Monica, Sierra Madre, South Gate, South Pasadena and Whittier. If the county or a regional agency raises the sales tax, Beverly Hills would carry an even larger share of the regional or countywide burden of generating sales tax since those cities already at the 10.25% cap won't contribute any more to countywide or regional funding.
Yes. Many essential purchases, prescription medicine and food would be exempt from any sales tax.
A majority of Beverly Hills sales tax revenue is generated from out-of-town shoppers.
No. Without Measure RP, the County keeps the money and will have discretion to spend the collected funds on whatever and wherever it sees fit.
