Sustainable City Plan
What is sustainability?
The United Nations defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In the long-term, sustainability for Beverly Hills means that the City has the capacity to provide the desired levels of service now and in the future; that the business community is able to thrive in fluctuating economic times; that the City and business community use ecologically sensitive practices; that resources are used in an efficient and effective manner; and that the local environment is protected as both an ecological asset and a benefit to the community.
Sustainability will not happen overnight. It is a process that is currently being undertaken by public agencies, businesses, organizations and community members. In 2009, the City of Beverly Hills adopted the Sustainable City Plan as a first step in becoming more sustainable. By working towards the nine goals in the plan, Beverly Hills will create a vibrant community, a healthy environment and a resilient economy.
