Entry Level Requirements (candidates without prior law enforcement experience or candidates who are employed by law enforcement agencies outside the State of California)
Examination Components. Entry-level police officer candidates must pass a written examination, oral interview, polygraph examination, background investigation and a physical agility test, along with medical and psychological examinations. Academy Graduate Requirements (candidates having a Certificate of Completion, within the past two years, from a California POST-approved Basic Law Enforcement Academy) Examination Components. Academy Graduates must pass an oral interview, polygraph examination, background investigation and a physical agility test, along with medical and psychological examinations. The written examination is waived for Academy Graduate candidates. Lateral Police Officer Requirements (candidates with a minimum of one year of current satisfactory employment as a sworn officer in a municipal, county or state police department in the State of California who possess a valid California Basic POST Certificate) Examination Components. All lateral police officer candidates must pass an oral interview, polygraph examination, background investigation and a physical agility test, along with medical and psychological examinations.
