Found Property:

Found property is non-evidentiary property, which, after coming into the custody of the Beverly Hills Police Department, has been determined to be lost or abandoned and is not known or suspected to be connected with any criminal offense. Found property is held for a period of 90 days while personnel attempt to identify and notify owners.

 

Unclaimed Found Property:

If unclaimed, the property is disposed of per department policy in accordance with California law. The finder of any property/cash that is not claimed within those 90 days can apply to claim the property/cash if they so wish.

Information on how to do this is available by calling 310-285-2158. Found weapons and contraband cannot be claimed.

Bring the following to your scheduled appointment:

  1. Field Property Receipt
  2. Valid Identification: (Driver’s License or passport)
  3. City Publication Fee Receipt: If applicable*
    1. *If the found property is valued at $250 or more, the Beverly Hills Police Department shall cause notice of the property to be published in a newspaper for seven (7) days. If the rightful owner does not claim the property, finder may claim found property after finder reimburses the cost of publication to the City of Beverly Hills (Cal. Civ. Code §2080.3). Payment shall be made at the Records Bureau located on the 3rd floor of the Police Department.

 

Lost or Stolen Property:

If your property has been lost or stolen, you should file a report as soon as possible. Please be as descriptive as possible and include any serial numbers or owner applied numbers on the item(s). Safekeeping:

Safekeeping property is non-evidentiary property that is placed in the custody of a law enforcement agency for temporary protection on behalf of the owner. Safekeeping property is held for a period of 90 days. If the owner is incarcerated, they must make arrangements to have the property picked up within the 90 day period. Safekeeping property not retrieved within this time period will be disposed of per departmental policy in accordance with California law.

 

Surrender of Weapons and/or Explosives:

If you have any firearms, ammunition or other type of weapon that you own and want to discard, you can bring it to the police department to be turned in for destruction at any time, 24 hours a day, or you can call us and a police officer will come to your house. If you bring it to the police department, make sure you follow all laws regarding transportation of the weapon and call us ahead of time to tell us you will be bringing it. Weapons turned in for destruction cannot be later released.

 

Unclaimed Funds:

Under Code Section 50050 and Code Section 50057, funds that are not the property of a local agency that remain unclaimed for three years become the property of the local agency after notice if not claimed or if no verified complaint is filed and served. At any time after the expiration of the three-year period, the Accounting Division of the City of Beverly Hills may cause a notice to be published once a week for two successive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation. The notice will state the amount of money, the payee name and that it is proposed that the money will become the property of the City on a designated date not less than 45 days nor more than 60 days after the first publication of the notice. Upon or prior to publication, a party of interest may file a claim with the Accounting Division which must include the claimant's name, address, amount of claim, the grounds on which the claim is founded, proof of identification, and any other information required by the City. The Accounting Division shall accept or reject that claim.
