At the February 18, 2014, City Council Regular Meeting, the City Council voted to regulate the sales and public consumption of electronic cigarettes (“e-cigarettes”) in the same manner as tobacco products in the City. E-cigarettes are nicotine delivery devices that are battery-powered and simulate tobacco smoking. The City Council felt it was important to take a proactive approach on the e-cigarette issue and promote a healthier community.
The concern has been the growing popularity and use of electronic cigarettes among the youth, according to a National Youth Tobacco Survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The City's e-cigarette ordinance went into effect on June 1, 2014.
